What is the Energy Intensive Industries Scheme?
Why has the scheme been introduced?
Carbon taxes levied by the UK government on energy suppliers add around £43 to the cost of every MWh consumed.
The EII Levy Exemption Scheme removes this cost for energy intensive businesses who hold a certificate – the aim being to ensure that the UK remains competitive for such businesses against jurisdictions where these levies aren’t charged.
Who qualifies for the scheme?
For a businesses to qualify they must meet two key tests:
- The ‘sector’ test – the business must be in an eligible sector (one that has been determined by government to have high electricity intensity and subject to international competition).
- The ‘business’ test – electricity costs must be 20% or more of the ‘Gross Value Added’ (roughly profit plus salaries).
